This is a rare, indigenous blue grape variety from Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Northern Italy. The name literally means “tongue-cutter,” a reference to the naturally high acidity and powerful tannins that give the wine its firm structure.
The grape produces deep ruby-red wines with aromas of red and dark fruit, spices, and sometimes a light earthy touch. With aging, more complex notes of spices, leather, and tobacco develop. Thanks to its pronounced acidity and tannins, Tazzelenghe is particularly well-suited for oak aging and has excellent aging potential.
