DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) are Italian quality classifications for wine. A DOC wine must comply with established rules regarding origin, grape varieties, production method, and minimum aging. This classification guarantees that the wine is typical of its region and produced according to recognized quality standards. A DOCG wine is subject to the strictest Italian wine regulations. In addition to all the DOC requirements, additional controls apply, such as lower permitted yields per hectare, stricter quality criteria, and mandatory inspections before and after bottling. Each bottle of DOCG wine carries a numbered seal on the neck as official certification.
